Equalities and Diversity Information
Equality Statement
The Equality Act 2010 applies across great Britain to public bodies listed in Schedule 19 and to other organisations when they are carrying out public functions.
The Public Sector Equality Duty has three aims. It requires public bodies to have due regard to the need to:
- eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment, victimisation and any other conduct prohibited by the act.
- Advance equality of opportunity between people who share a protected characteristic and people who do not share it; and
- Foster good relations between people who share a protected characteristic and people who do not share it.
The new Equality duty covers the following protected characteristics:
- Age
- Disability
- Gender reassignment
- Marriage and Civil Partnership (in respect of having the requirement to have due regard for the need to eliminate discrimination)
- Pregnancy and Maternity
- Race - this includes ethnic or national origins, colour or nationality
- Religion or belief - this includes lack of belief
- Sex
- Sexual Orientation
The Equality Duty is designed to reduce bureaucracy while ensuring public bodies play their part in making society fairer by tacking discrimination and providing equality of opportunity for all.
Rachel McMillan Nursery School takes account of the Equalities duties in all areas of the day to day life of the school including admissions, recruitment and employment of staff, Curriculum and activities, groups and events held on site.

Our school Equality Objectives

- To monitor the involvement of families in school activities, meetings, learning experiences and events to ensure that groups with protected characteristics are not disadvantaged in their school expertise
- To give professional development to all staff and governors on diversity and equal opportunities so that all members of the school leadership and staff community have a good understanding of our ethos, practise and policies as well as our duty to the legal requirements.
