Dear Mums, Dads and Carers,

My name is Rachel Hogarth Smith. As of 1st September 2017 I am honoured to be the new head of Rachel McMillan Nursery School. I was previously the Deputy Head for 10 years, so I know the school really well.

The staff and governors at Rachel McMillan are an amazing team of people and we all welcome you and your child to Rachel McMillan Nursery School and Children’s Centre. We would like to work in partnership with you, to help your child to become a confident and independent learner.

We believe very strongly that young children learn best by playing and by following their own passions and interests.

We support the children's learning by ensuring our curriculum is rich and varied and provides challenges that stimulate their interest and follow their passions, particularly outside in our lovely, large garden.

Our founders, Margaret and Rachel McMillan, believed that children learn best if they are clean, well fed and healthy. They did not have classrooms, they had rooms called shelters (which is what our classrooms are called today). Margaret and Rachel encouraged the children to be out in the fresh air for most of the day, learning through their interactions with other children and adults and their environment. The children at Rachel McMillan still do most of their learning outside - no matter the weather! There is a saying 'there is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing!'

Our nursery has been part of the Deptford community for a hundred years. Margaret and Rachel McMillan, were pioneers of early childhood education in this country and their ideas have been followed and talked about all over the world. The McMillans strongly valued working closely with mums, dads and carers. We carry on this tradition today.

We have a well qualified, confident, thoughtful, experienced staff team. We all look forward to working closely with you to make sure your children’s time at Rachel McMillan is a happy and productive one.
